How the Cover Letter Generator Works
How the on-device generator turns your resume and a job advert into a letter: what it reads, what it writes, what stays in your browser and what the optional AI pass does.
Who the cover letter generator is for
It is for anyone applying with a resume already written: if you are tailoring applications to several similar adverts, or you write English as a second language and want the register of the market you are applying in, the generator does the structural work so you can spend the time on the evidence.
It is a drafting tool, so it suits people who intend to edit the result — not anyone looking for a finished letter to send unread.
What you need to use it
You need the job advert as text and one real skill or achievement to write from. There is no account, no card and no upload: the generator runs in the browser, and the optional AI pass uses only the text that request needs.
If you have not written the resume yet, start there — the free resume builder takes about the same time and gives the letter something to draw on.
How the generator builds a letter
Four steps, in order — from the advert you paste to the file you download.
Reading the job advert
Requirement and keyword extraction
When you paste a job posting or import your resume, the text is parsed in your own browser. A rule-based analyzer extracts the posting's named skills, tools, seniority and repeated terms. Nothing is uploaded to do this, and running the generator never creates an account or a stored profile.
Matching your own evidence
Your results, not invented ones
The generator compares the posting's requirements with what your resume actually says, and prefers bullets that carry a number — a budget, a percentage, a team size, a timeframe. It composes sentences from your material; it does not add employers, qualifications or results you did not record.
Applying local conventions
Paper size, dates, salutation, sign-off
Conventions differ by market, and the generator has a preset for each supported one — US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. A preset adjusts the paper size (Letter or A4), the date order, the salutation and sign-off, and the address block. Anything you type yourself overrides the preset.
Clean layout and export
Selectable text, one reading order
The letter is laid out as a single flow of selectable text with standard paragraph breaks — no tables, text boxes or embedded images — and exports to PDF, Word (.docx) or plain text. No layout can control how a particular employer's software processes a file; what this removes is the formatting that stops text being extracted at all.
What runs where — and what happens to your data
What the generator does, and what it deliberately leaves to you.
On-device generator
- No account, email sign-up or card required at any point.
- The letter is composed by a rule-based engine running in your browser.
- Your draft is stored in your own browser storage, not in a Resume Earth account.
- Site analytics measure page visits; they do not receive the contents of your letter.
Two ways to write it
- The on-device engine drafts a letter immediately, with no server round trip.
- An optional AI pass can rewrite the draft — you choose when to run it.
- No paywall and no watermark on any export; there is nothing to buy.
- Every paragraph stays editable by hand, and one click reverts an AI rewrite.
Formatting that extracts cleanly
- Standard fonts and characters, so nothing depends on a ligature mapping.
- One text flow rather than side-by-side columns that can interleave when read.
- Dates written in the market's order rather than abbreviated.
- The letter's own text carries your name and the role you are applying for.
Market conventions
- Presets for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain.
- The letter template includes no photograph, date of birth or marital status.
- Address blocks and date order follow the market you select.
- Three length targets: concise (150–210 words), standard (240–320) and detailed (340–430).
The two ways to write the letter
The table below describes the two modes the tool offers — it is not a comparison with any other product.
| Dimension | On-device generator | Optional AI pass |
|---|---|---|
| Where the text is processed | In your browser — no request is sent to compose the letter | Your letter and the advert are sent to the AI endpoint for that single rewrite |
| Where the facts come from | Your resume and the advert, matched by rules | Rewrites the draft you already have — it is not asked to add new facts |
| What the export contains | Selectable text, one reading order, no tables or text boxes | The same layout — only the wording changes |
| Cost and limits | Free, no account, no watermark, no download cap | Free; because it runs on a shared endpoint it is rate-limited |
| When it is useful | The default: a complete letter in one pass | When you want a different tone for the same facts |
Cover letter generator FAQ
How does the cover letter generator work without sending my data to a server?+
The generator itself runs in your browser: a rule-based engine in the page reads the job advert, matches it against your resume and composes the letter locally. Nothing is uploaded to produce the first draft. The one exception is the optional AI pass, which you have to choose to run — that single request sends the draft and advert to the AI endpoint to be rewritten.
Why does the generator not require an account or a credit card?+
Because the draft is produced on your own device, there is no per-request server cost to recover and no reason to ask for an email address. Your letter is stored in your browser, so there is nothing to sign in to and no subscription to cancel.
Will ATS software reject a cover letter generated here?+
No one can promise that, because each employer configures its own software and many do not read cover letters at all. What the export does is avoid the formatting that breaks text extraction: the words stay selectable, there is one reading order, and there are no tables or text boxes. If a portal asks you to paste the letter into a field instead of uploading it, use the plain-text export.
Does the generator invent achievements?+
No. The engine composes sentences from the terms in the advert and the details already in your resume — it does not have another source of facts. What it cannot do is check that your resume is accurate: a claim you typed in is treated as true, so read the draft and remove anything you could not discuss at interview.
Can I change the tone and the export format?+
Yes. Five tones are available — Professional, Confident, Modern, Friendly and Executive — along with four career levels (entry, mid, senior, executive) and three lengths (concise, standard, detailed). Export is one click to PDF, Microsoft Word (.docx) or plain text (.txt).
