How to Write a Swedish CV (Skriva CV): Structure & Tips

Swedish recruiters value brevity, honesty and concrete results — and the modern Swedish CV reflects all three. This guide covers the structure, the personlig sammanfattning, and the photo and references questions.

The Swedish CV character

What makes a Swedish CV different

Swedish hiring culture is consensus-driven and allergic to overselling. A CV full of superlatives ('world-class', 'exceptional') reads as unreliable to a Swedish recruiter; plain statements with numbers read as confident. Understatement with evidence is the Swedish register.

Length is one to two A4 pages, reverse-chronological, in the language of the job posting — Swedish postings want Swedish, English postings want English. Arbetsförmedlingen and the major boards (LinkedIn, Indeed Sweden, Blocket Jobb) all reward keyword-literal, scannable documents.

The sections

The structure Swedish recruiters expect

  • Personuppgifter Name, phone, professional email and city are enough. Personnummer (personal identity number) never belongs on a CV, and date of birth is conventionally omitted. A photo is optional and declining — never mandatory.
  • Personlig sammanfattning The personal summary: two to four lines under your name — role, seniority, sector, one measured result. It has replaced the older objective line in modern Swedish applications.
  • Arbetslivserfarenhet Job title, employer, city, dates with month and year, three to five bullets per role. Swedish recruiters look for concrete outcomes and collaboration evidence — what you delivered and with whom.
  • Utbildning Highest qualification first: degree (kandidatexamen, masterexamen), gymnasium for starters, plus relevant kurser and certifications. Once experienced, one or two lines suffice.
  • Kompetenser & språk Six to ten skills mirroring the advert, languages with honest levels. Swedish and English levels both matter in the Swedish market — state them plainly.
  • Referenser Conventionally 'References provided on request' or omitted from the CV entirely — contact details are exchanged at the final stage. Brief your referees: Swedish employers genuinely call them.

The summary

Writing the personlig sammanfattning

Two to four lines, no adjectives you cannot prove. The pattern: professional identity + one verifiable result + what you are targeting. 'Warehouse coordinator with 5 years in grocery logistics. Picked accuracy of 99.6% across 1,200 orders a week; now training two new coordinators. Seeking a shift-lead role in distribution.' That is the whole job of the section.

The comparison that fails: 'social person who likes challenges'. Swedish recruiters read dozens of those an hour. Facts are what your summary is for; personality is what the interview is for.

Formalities

Photo, cover letter and ATS in Sweden

The photo: optional and declining. Union-linked and public-sector employers in particular run photo-free processes, and discrimination law (diskrimineringslagen) makes photo demands risky for employers. Include one only if a specific employer asks — professional, recent, neutral background.

The personligt brev (personal letter) remains common in Swedish applications — a one-page letter complementing, never repeating, the CV. On ATS: Swedish midsize and large employers parse applications through systems like Teamtailor (a Swedish product, dominant locally), Varbi and Workbuster — so one column, standard headings and selectable text are not optional.

Practical example

Sammanfattning: before / after

The same candidate twice — one version reads Swedish, one does not.

Personal summary (pre-school) — before / after

3 lines, rewritten

BEFORE: Happy and driven person who loves working with children. Looking for a developing role in pre-school where I can grow together with the team. AFTER: Förskollärare (licensed pre-school teacher), 4 years in Gothenburg municipal pre-schools. Led language-development groups of 8 children; parent satisfaction in our unit rose from 82% to 94% in two years. Seeking a senior educator role.

Qualification, setting, group size and a measured outcome — the 'after' version could be verified with one phone call.

FAQ

Swedish CV questions

Should I include a photo on a Swedish CV?

Optional and increasingly omitted. Many Swedish employers — especially public-sector and union-linked ones — prefer photo-free applications. If a photo is requested, use a recent professional one on a neutral background.

Do I include references on the CV?

No. 'References provided on request' or nothing — contact details are exchanged at the final stage. Do brief your referees early, because Swedish employers really do call them.

How long should a Swedish CV be?

One page for starters, two for experienced professionals. Swedish recruiters are blunt about it: more than two pages signals poor prioritisation.

Do I need a personligt brev as well?

Often, yes — Swedish employers still ask for a personal letter alongside the CV. Keep it to one page and make it complement the CV rather than repeat it.
