Accountant Resume Builder

Accounting resumes are screened on qualifications first and software second. Whether you are ACCA, CPA, CIMA or ACA qualified — and whether you are part-qualified — decides which roles you are even considered for, so it belongs near the top rather than buried under experience.

This builder gives you a conventional, conservative layout that parses cleanly, with the qualification and software lines where both a recruiter and an ATS keyword search will look for them.

Who is this Accountant resume guide for, and what do you need?

It is for anyone applying for Accountant roles — a first application, a step up, or a resume written for another market that now has to answer what accountant screens check. It is a builder plus a written guide, not a job board, and it cannot tell you whether a particular employer will reply.

What you need
Your own record of employers, dates and results, plus evidence for the skills these roles are screened on: ACCA, CPA, CIMA, SAP. There is nothing to upload and no account to create.
How to use this page
Step 1: read what the first screen checks. Step 2: build the resume from an ATS template. Step 3: compare the result with the advert before you apply.
What makes it different
It starts from the first screen a accountant application meets — qualification and status — fully qualified, part-qualified, or exam stage — rather than from a generic resume outline.
What it cannot do
It cannot supply the figures behind your work, and it cannot know which accountant keywords an individual employer searches for — the advert is the only reliable list.

Before you write a word

What Accountant hiring managers screen for first

Every field filters differently. Knowing what is being checked in the first thirty seconds tells you what belongs near the top of the page — and what can safely sit at the bottom.

  • Qualification and status — fully qualified, part-qualified, or exam stage.
  • Software fluency: the ERP or ledger system named in the ad is usually a filter.
  • Scope of the reporting you have owned — entity count, turnover, consolidation.
  • Controls and audit experience, especially for industry roles.

Section order

The resume structure that works for a Accountant

Section order is not a style choice. It decides which information a recruiter meets first, and for this role the answer is specific.

  1. Qualifications

Directly under the summary. Name the body, the status and the year — this is the first filter applied.

  2. Skills

Accounting software first, then standards (IFRS, GAAP), then reporting tools.

  3. Experience

Entity count, turnover and what you owned. Close timeliness and savings are the strongest metrics.

  4. Education

    Degree and institution, one line.

Keyword targeting

Skills and keywords for a Accountant resume

An applicant tracking system searches for literal noun phrases, so the vocabulary on your resume has to match the vocabulary in the job ad. Write the tool name, not a description of the tool.

Hard skills worth listing

  • ACCA
  • CPA
  • CIMA
  • SAP
  • Oracle NetSuite
  • Xero
  • QuickBooks
  • Sage
  • Excel
  • IFRS
  • GAAP
  • Power BI

Only list what you can use unaided. Every item here is something an interviewer may reasonably test.

Phrases an ATS keyword search matches on

  • month-end close
  • management accounts
  • reconciliation
  • statutory reporting
  • audit
  • budgeting
  • variance analysis
  • VAT return
  • payroll
  • internal controls

These are the phrases recruiters type into an ATS search box. If your resume says “container orchestration” and the search is for the platform name, you will not appear in the results.

Copy the shape, not the words

Accountant resume examples you can adapt

Professional summary

ACCA-qualified accountant with 7 years in industry, owning month-end close for a £90M turnover group across three entities. Cut close from 12 working days to 6 and rebuilt the management pack now used by the board.

Notice what is missing: no “hardworking team player”, no list of soft skills. Years, scope, one specific result. The AI summary writer in the resume summary generator builds this shape from your own details.

Achievement bullet points

  • Reduced month-end close from 12 working days to 6 by automating intercompany reconciliation, freeing the team for analysis.
  • Identified £240K of overpaid VAT across two periods during a self-initiated review of the input-tax treatment.
  • Rebuilt the monthly management pack into a 9-page board report, cutting preparation time by 40% and adding cash-flow forecasting.

Each bullet follows the same pattern: action, method, measurable result. Replace the figures with your own — never with numbers you cannot defend at interview. The bullet point generator rewrites your existing duties into this form.

Layout

Templates that suit a Accountant resume

These all use a single reading column, standard section headings and real selectable text — the three properties that decide whether an applicant tracking system can parse the document at all.

Why ATS formatting matters for this role

An applicant tracking system does not rank resumes out of 100. It parses your document into fields — job titles, dates, employers, skills — and lets a recruiter search those fields. Anything it cannot parse effectively does not exist, which is why formatting is a functional requirement rather than an aesthetic one.

Common questions

Accountant resume FAQ

Where should I put my ACCA or CPA qualification?

Directly under your professional summary, before your work history. For most accounting roles the qualification is a hard filter, and a recruiter scanning for thirty seconds needs to find it immediately.

How do I handle being part-qualified?

State it precisely: "ACCA part-qualified, 9 of 13 papers complete, completion expected 2027". Employers hiring part-qualified want the exact stage because it affects study support and salary banding. Vague wording costs you interviews.

Should I list every accounting system I have used?

List the ones you can operate unaided. If the ad names SAP and you have used it for a full close cycle, say so specifically — "SAP S/4HANA, month-end close and consolidation" beats a bare product name.

How do I quantify accounting work?

Three reliable measures: time (close days saved, reporting turnaround), money (savings found, recoveries, cost avoided) and scale (turnover, entity count, transaction volume). Almost every accounting role has at least one of the three.
