Teacher Resume Builder

Teaching resumes are read for three things in the first pass: qualified teacher status, subject and key-stage specialism, and evidence about pupil outcomes rather than activity. A resume that lists duties performed is far weaker than one that shows what changed for the students.

This builder produces a straightforward single-column document that parses cleanly through school and district application systems.

Who is this Teacher resume guide for, and what do you need?

It is for anyone applying for Teacher roles — a first application, a step up, or a resume written for another market that now has to answer what teacher screens check. It is a builder plus a written guide, not a job board, and it cannot tell you whether a particular employer will reply.

What you need
Your own record of employers, dates and results, plus evidence for the skills these roles are screened on: Lesson planning, Differentiation, Assessment, Classroom management. There is nothing to upload and no account to create.
How to use this page
Step 1: read what the first screen checks. Step 2: build the resume from an ATS template. Step 3: compare the result with the advert before you apply.
What makes it different
It starts from the first screen a teacher application meets — qualified teacher status and the jurisdiction it applies to — rather than from a generic resume outline.
What it cannot do
It cannot supply the figures behind your work, and it cannot know which teacher keywords an individual employer searches for — the advert is the only reliable list.

Before you write a word

What Teacher hiring managers screen for first

Every field filters differently. Knowing what is being checked in the first thirty seconds tells you what belongs near the top of the page — and what can safely sit at the bottom.

  • Qualified teacher status and the jurisdiction it applies to.
  • Subject and key stage or grade level, matched exactly to the vacancy.
  • Pupil outcomes — progress data, attainment, attendance.
  • Additional responsibilities: pastoral, SEN, curriculum leadership, exam coordination.

Section order

The resume structure that works for a Teacher

Section order is not a style choice. It decides which information a recruiter meets first, and for this role the answer is specific.

  1. Certification

QTS or state licence, with the jurisdiction and year. This is checked before your experience is read.

  2. Teaching skills

Specialism, key stages and any SEN or EAL experience.

  3. Experience

School type, subject, key stage and outcomes. Include leadership responsibilities explicitly.

  4. Education

    Degree, teaching qualification and institution.

Keyword targeting

Skills and keywords for a Teacher resume

An applicant tracking system searches for literal noun phrases, so the vocabulary on your resume has to match the vocabulary in the job ad. Write the tool name, not a description of the tool.

Hard skills worth listing

  • Lesson planning
  • Differentiation
  • Assessment
  • Classroom management
  • SEN support
  • Safeguarding
  • Google Classroom
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Data tracking
  • Parent communication
  • Curriculum design
  • QTS

Only list what you can use unaided. Every item here is something an interviewer may reasonably test.

Phrases an ATS keyword search matches on

  • pupil progress
  • behaviour management
  • formative assessment
  • pastoral care
  • key stage
  • differentiated learning
  • extra-curricular
  • professional development
  • marking and feedback
  • intervention

These are the phrases recruiters type into an ATS search box. If your resume says “container orchestration” and the search is for the platform name, you will not appear in the results.

Teacher resume examples you can adapt

Professional summary

Secondary science teacher with 7 years across KS3 and KS4, currently head of biology. Raised GCSE combined-science Progress 8 from -0.21 to +0.18 over three years and lead the department's intervention programme for borderline grade-4 students.

Notice what is missing: no “hardworking team player”, no list of soft skills. Years, scope, one specific result. The AI summary writer in the resume summary generator builds this shape from your own details.

Achievement bullet points

  • Raised GCSE combined-science Progress 8 from -0.21 to +0.18 over three years through targeted intervention for borderline students.
  • Cut Year 9 low-level disruption incidents by 45% by introducing a consistent department behaviour script and seating protocol.
  • Designed a KS3 curriculum map now used by 6 teachers across two sites, reducing planning time by roughly 3 hours a week.

Each bullet follows the same pattern: action, method, measurable result. Replace the figures with your own — never with numbers you cannot defend at interview. The bullet point generator rewrites your existing duties into this form.

Templates that suit a Teacher resume

These all use a single reading column, standard section headings and real selectable text — the three properties that decide whether an applicant tracking system can parse the document at all.

Why ATS formatting matters for this role

An applicant tracking system does not rank resumes out of 100. It parses your document into fields — job titles, dates, employers, skills — and lets a recruiter search those fields. Anything it cannot parse effectively does not exist, which is why formatting is a functional requirement rather than an aesthetic one.

Common questions

Teacher resume FAQ

How do I quantify teaching outcomes?

Use progress and attainment data where you are allowed to: Progress 8 scores, percentage achieving target grade, attendance improvement, or reduction in behaviour incidents. Relative change is usually sufficient and avoids publishing sensitive cohort data.

Should I list every extra-curricular activity I run?

List the two or three that show sustained commitment and leadership, not every club you have ever supervised. Running the Duke of Edinburgh award for four years is a signal; a list of fifteen one-term activities is not.

How do I handle teaching in a different country?

Explain the equivalence plainly: "QTS (England), 7 years secondary experience, currently completing state certification for [state]". Hiring teams cannot map foreign qualifications themselves, so doing it for them removes a reason to skip your application.

Do I need safeguarding training on the resume?

Yes if it is current and named — most schools treat it as mandatory. One line under certifications with the date is enough; it also confirms you understand the compliance expectations of the role.

About this page

This Teacher resume guide is written and maintained by the people who build the tools it describes, and it is reviewed whenever the product changes.

No external reviewer has approved this page. It carries no named expert, no certification and no reviewer credentials, because the site does not hold any. There is also no sponsored content and no paid placement in a list or comparison.

Because the tools need no account, the site has no ratings, testimonials or user counts to publish. Everything here is either a statement about how the software behaves, which you can test, or a convention you can check with the employer.
