Financial Analyst Resume Builder

Finance recruiters read for modelling depth and forecast accuracy before anything else. A bullet that says "built financial models" is invisible; one that says "built the three-statement model behind a £40M acquisition case, later used for the board paper" tells them exactly what level you work at.

This builder produces the conservative, single-column layout finance hiring expects, with your systems and qualifications in the positions an ATS search reaches.

Who is this Financial Analyst resume guide for, and what do you need?

It is for anyone applying for Financial Analyst roles — a first application, a step up, or a resume written for another market that now has to answer what financial analyst screens check. It is a builder plus a written guide, not a job board, and it cannot tell you whether a particular employer will reply.

What you need
Your own record of employers, dates and results, plus evidence for the skills these roles are screened on: Financial modelling, Excel, Power BI, SAP. There is nothing to upload and no account to create.
How to use this page
Step 1: read what the first screen checks. Step 2: build the resume from an ATS template. Step 3: compare the result with the advert before you apply.
What makes it different
It starts from the first screen a financial analyst application meets — modelling capability — three-statement, dcf, scenario and sensitivity work — rather than from a generic resume outline.
What it cannot do
It cannot supply the figures behind your work, and it cannot know which financial analyst keywords an individual employer searches for — the advert is the only reliable list.

Before you write a word

What Financial Analyst hiring managers screen for first

Every field filters differently. Knowing what is being checked in the first thirty seconds tells you what belongs near the top of the page — and what can safely sit at the bottom.

  • Modelling capability — three-statement, DCF, scenario and sensitivity work.
  • Forecast accuracy: how close were your numbers to the outturn?
  • Excel depth, and whether you have used a dedicated planning tool.
  • Business partnering — did the analysis change a decision?

Section order

The resume structure that works for a Financial Analyst

Section order is not a style choice. It decides which information a recruiter meets first, and for this role the answer is specific.

  1. Skills

Modelling capability first, then systems, then standards and qualifications.

  2. Experience

Name the model, the decision it informed and the accuracy or value outcome.

  3. Qualifications

CFA, ACCA or CIMA status with the stage, if relevant to the role.

  4. Education

    Degree, one line.

Keyword targeting

Skills and keywords for a Financial Analyst resume

An applicant tracking system searches for literal noun phrases, so the vocabulary on your resume has to match the vocabulary in the job ad. Write the tool name, not a description of the tool.

Hard skills worth listing

  • Financial modelling
  • Excel
  • Power BI
  • SAP
  • Anaplan
  • Oracle Hyperion
  • SQL
  • VBA
  • IFRS
  • CFA
  • ACCA
  • Tableau

Only list what you can use unaided. Every item here is something an interviewer may reasonably test.

Phrases an ATS keyword search matches on

  • forecasting
  • budgeting
  • variance analysis
  • cash flow
  • DCF
  • scenario analysis
  • management reporting
  • business partnering
  • cost analysis
  • financial planning

These are the phrases recruiters type into an ATS search box. If your resume says “container orchestration” and the search is for the platform name, you will not appear in the results.

Copy the shape, not the words

Financial Analyst resume examples you can adapt

Professional summary

Financial analyst with 5 years supporting commercial decision-making in a £250M turnover group. Own the rolling 18-month forecast and built the acquisition model behind a £40M transaction approved by the board in 2025.

Notice what is missing: no “hardworking team player”, no list of soft skills. Years, scope, one specific result. The AI summary writer in the resume summary generator builds this shape from your own details.

Achievement bullet points

  • Built the three-statement model behind a £40M acquisition case, later adopted as the basis of the board paper and the lender submission.
  • Improved rolling forecast accuracy from ±11% to ±3.5% by moving to driver-based assumptions agreed with each commercial lead.
  • Modelled four outsourcing scenarios for the logistics function, identifying the option that saved £1.1M a year at acceptable service risk.

Each bullet follows the same pattern: action, method, measurable result. Replace the figures with your own — never with numbers you cannot defend at interview. The bullet point generator rewrites your existing duties into this form.

Layout

Templates that suit a Financial Analyst resume

These all use a single reading column, standard section headings and real selectable text — the three properties that decide whether an applicant tracking system can parse the document at all.

Applicant tracking systems

Why ATS formatting matters for this role

An applicant tracking system does not rank resumes out of 100. It parses your document into fields — job titles, dates, employers, skills — and lets a recruiter search those fields. Anything it cannot parse effectively does not exist, which is why formatting is a functional requirement rather than an aesthetic one.

Common questions

Financial Analyst resume FAQ

How do I describe modelling work without breaching confidentiality?

Describe the type of model, its purpose and the outcome, not the figures inside it. "Built the acquisition case model for a £40M transaction" is safe; reproducing the client's revenue build is not.

Is "advanced Excel" credible on a finance resume?

Only when specified. Name the capability instead: "Excel — array formulas, Power Query, scenario and sensitivity tables, VBA macros for month-end automation". Interviewers test Excel claims routinely.

Should I mention CFA if I have only passed level one?

Yes, with the stage stated: "CFA Level I passed (2025), Level II scheduled 2026". It demonstrates direction and commitment, which employers value, and hiding it wastes a signal.

How important is business partnering on a financial analyst resume?

Increasingly decisive. Pure reporting roles are being automated, so evidence that your analysis changed a commercial decision — and that you presented it to a non-finance audience — is what separates candidates at interview.

No external reviewer has approved this page. It carries no named expert, no certification and no reviewer credentials, because the site does not hold any. There is also no sponsored content and no paid placement in a list or comparison.

Because the tools need no account, the site has no ratings, testimonials or user counts to publish. Everything here is either a statement about how the software behaves, which you can test, or a convention you can check with the employer.
